Sox Come Up Short in Semi Finals
|
Well the tale of two diferent teams showed up again today at Sinclare Yards. In the fourth round robin game of the Jamie Biocchi Memorial Tournament on Sunday morning the Pee Wee Black Sox could only muster up three runs in a 9-3 lose to the Sudbury Strikeforce. Some sloppy defense proved costly in the lose but the bright spots of the game went to Anthony Biocchi with a lead off double followed by two singles. Biocchi also had two stolen bases in the game. Michael Wilson had a double and single in the game while Jamis McMaster doubled and singles went to Joel Soltys, Josh Clark ( 2 ) Noah Byers, Cameron Oliver and Brandon Dewar. John MacDonald had to leave the game after fourth inning double with an injury to his lower leg.
After the morning lose to the Strikeforce, the Sox faced the highly powered Valley East Heat in the semi finals. A very slow offensive start again proved costly for the Sox. Matt St. Pierre got a start in right field but was left stranded on first base after a second inning walk, with Nolan at second and Oliver at third. Falling behind 11-1 through the top of the fourth inning, the Sox final got their offense going scoring five runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Noah Byers bases loaded double was followed by Biocchi's single and Brandon Dewars two run double. Strong pitching by Beau Nolan and Cameron Oliver and Joel Soltys late in the game gave the Sox a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh inning. After scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh, the Sox stranded the bases loaded with one out to fall two runs short in the game. Ronnie Sayers was hit by a pitch in the seventh after have two singles in the fifth and sixth innings. Sayers also suffered a foot injury on Saturday which limited his playing time on the field, but his bat never left the line up. The game was definitely hi-lighted by the Heat's Brett McKinnon's mammoth lead off home run in the top of the third inning, clearing the 230 foot left field fence by 20 feet. Valley East Heat went on to claim the championship over Sudbury Strikeforce 9-6 in a very exciting final game. A very special thank you goes out to all the teams from the Sudbury area and Sault Ste Marie. Too many thank you's to mention go out to all the help to organize and run the 3 day long tournament. Mark McMaster gets the biggest thank you from the Sox team for grooming the fields and running the home run derby all weekend long. Michael Wilson was the winner of this years home run derby, which had numerous entries from all the teams. The Pee Wee Black Sox are in Goderich Ontario this upcoming weekend. |

In game one on Saturday afternoon the Pee Wee Sox jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first inning on their home town rivals Sports Gold Pee Wee All Stars. One would have thought that would be enough to coast to victory. Well the Pee Wee All Stars had a different idea than that. The never say die All Stars battled all game long to tie the game 12-12 in the fourth inning after scoring eight runs of there own in the 3rd inning. While the Sox offense sputtered for the last three innings of the game they had to rely on a 2 out, 3 and 2 count strike out by Joel Soltys in the bottom of the last inning to salvage a 12 -12 tie. Brandon Dewar had a single and two doubles to go along with Beau Nolan's double and two singles. Michael Wilson also reached base three times with a single and two walks. Nick Brunetta, Nick Sarlo and Bruce Solomon reaches base three times each for the Pee Wee All Stars with Brunetta scoring the tieing run in the bottom of the fourth. Cater Lobert had a solid outing on the mound to keep the Sox in check for the last two innings.
In game two of the day the Sox found themselves down 8-1 after two innings to the Valley East Heat Bantams. While Anthony Biocchi started the game but didn't get any run support or defense for the first two innings he gave way to Josh Clark. The bats came alive for the Sox in the third inning started by Brandon Dewar's lead off triple followed by Joel Soltys' one out double. With Josh Clark, Cameron Oliver and Beau Nolan on base, Jamis McMaster cleared the bases with a triple of his own making it 8-6. Then with McMaster, Dewar and Michael Wilson on base the Sox took the lead for good on a hit from Ronnie Sayers. Josh Clark got the win pitching an amazing 4 1/3 innings allowing only one run. Matthew St. Pierre didn't see any action in the game but was there keeping his team thinking positive all game long. The Sox play the Sudbury Stikeforce on the Sunday morning with the winner advancing to the finals at 2:15pm and the loser playing in the semi finals at 11:15pm. If you are looking for some excitment on Sunday come and watch these young boys, on all the teams, give it there all to try and win the Jamie Biocchi Memorial Tournament. |
