Mosquito Black Sox go 1-2 in Leamington

For the second straight year in a row, the Mosquito Black Sox participated in the Leamington Mosquito ‘A’ 12-team Tournament. With a disappointing finish last going 0-3, the Sox wanted to improve their results from last and make it to Sunday for the playoff rounds.

The Soo took on the Chatham Diamonds in their first game, coming out with the bats on fire, scoring 15 runs in the top of the first inning, and scoring a few more in the second and fourth while Chatham scored three runs in the second, three runs in the third and five in the fifth as the Sox began to make errors, letting Chatham back into the game. The Sox combined 8 errors in the game but held on for a 21-11 mercy rule final in 5 innings of play.

Jesse Soltys got the win, pitching 4 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 walks, 6 runs while striking out 2. Charlie DiCorpo got the save pitching 1 inning, allowing 4 hits, 5 runs while striking out 1.

On offense, the Sox were amazing with 18 hits starting with the Sox’s game M.V.P., T.J. Conroy leading the way with 4 singles and a triple with 3 RBI’s. Issac Lennox had 3 singles, 3 RBI’s, Liam Brescacin had 2 singles, 5 RBI’s, Geryd Lesage had a single and a double with 3 RBI’s, Marcus Moore with a single and 3 RBI’s, Jesse Soltys had a single and 2 RBI’s, Noah Pearce and Charlie DiCorpo both had a single and an RBI and Austin Hurley had a single.

Off to a great start, the Mosquito Black Sox now faced the Belle River Braves in their second game. At the end of May, the Sox lost to Belle River 13-3 in Techumseh and were now hoping for a better result. Off to a great start, the Sox were down only 3-1 until the fifth inning, where 3 hits and 5 errors led to a 10 run inning for the Braves. The Sox managed to score one run in the bottom of the fifth, but not enough to survive a mercy rule finish in favour of the Braves. The final score was 13-2 for the Braves.

Liam Brescacin was tagged with the loss pitching 3.1 innings, allowing only 3 hits, 2 walks, 3 runs while striking out 4. Braedon Whalen came in to relieve Liam pitching 1 inning, allowing 3 hits, 2 walks, 5 runs while striking out 2. Marcus Moore closed the game off pitching .2 innings, allowing only 1 hit, 2 walks, 5 runs while striking out 1. Liam Brescacin was awarded the Sox’s game M.V.P. for his excellent pitching through only 42 pitches.

On the offense, Noah Pearce led the way with a double and an RBI, while Isaac Lennox and Geryd Lesage also had a single. Liam Brescacin had an RBI.

The Black Sox’s last chance to make Sunday’s playoff round was against the home team Leamington Lakers. Beating the Lakers would give the Sox a good chance at winning the division if not winning the wild card to advance to Sunday’s finals. Unfortuately, the Sox ran into some great pitching as they could only produce one hit and made 6 errors. The Lakers capitalized on the Sox’s errors scoring 8 runs throughout the game, ending the Sox’s chances at making the playoff round, losing the game 8-0.

Isaac Lennox was tagged with the loss as he pitched 1.2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, 1 run while striking out 3. T.J. Conroy pitched .2 innings, giving up 2 walks and 3 runs. Noah Pearce then came in for 2.2 innings, allowing 5 hits, 0 walks, 4 runs while striking out 4. 5 runners reached on errors. Braedon Whalen pitched 1.1 innings, allowing 2 walks and striking out 3, and Marcus Moore came in to close with 2 pitches, both ground ball outs.

On the offense, Geryd Lesage had the only hit of the game, a double. Isaac Lennox was awarded the Sox’s game M.V.P. for his pitching. Noah Pearce also pitched very well.

The Mosquito Black Sox continue their regular season in the Pee Wee House League with the Soo Minor Baseball Association as they sit in second place as they wait for their next tournament in August.

Sault Ste. Marie will be hosting the 2010 Mosquito ‘A’ OBA Provincial Championships during the Labour Day weekend in September at Sinclair Yards on Black Rd. The Black Sox are very proud to host the tournament once again this year and are excited about playing in their hometown.
