BLACK SOX SPLIT WITH ROCKETS

It is not often that a pitcher throws a complete game allowing one hit and picks up the loss. But such was the case Saturday afternoon as D.J. Carter went the distance for the Cambrian Nissan Black Sox giving up one hit over seven innings as the visiting Traverse City Rockets defeated Carter and the Black Sox 4-1.

Carter(2-3) was done in by the seven walks and three Black Sox errors. The Black Sox jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Alex Morrison singled home D.J.Carter who had walked with two out.

Traverse City scored once in the tiop of the third on their only hit of the game. In the top of the fourth the Rockets scored three times on three walks, two Black Sox errors and four wild pitches to take a 4-1 lead that they never gave up.

Alex Morrison had a pair of singles to lead the Black Sox offence as they manged five hits over the course of the game.

The Soo bounced back in the second game defeating Traverse City 14-1 in a game called after five innings due to the mercy rule. Chris Buonomo(5-0) went the distance allowing only two hits, walking three, hitting a batter while striking out none.

The Black Sox scored once in the second,four in the third and broke the game open with nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Black Sox had eleven hits and seven walks in the shortened game.

Catcher Kory Lafreniere had a bases loaded double that cleared the bases and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that scored another run giving him four RBI's for the game. Scott Thornton drew two bases loaded walks, drove in one more run on a single good for three RBI's. Chris Buonomo helped his own cause with four singles and one RBI.

The Black Sox were scheduled to host Mancelona Crush on Sunday in a doubleheader but were rained out. The games will be made up at a future date.

The record for the Black Sox in the Great Lakes Baseball League stands at 3-2 and their overall record is 16-15.

Next action for the Black Sox is Tuesday,June 30 when the host the EUP Travelers in Great Lakes Baseball League play at Sinclair Yards starting at 7 PM.

TIE BREAKER ELIMINATES BLACK SOX

The Cambrian Nissan Black Sox finished with a 2-2 record in pool play at the Gregg Johnson Memorial Tournament played this past weekend played in the cities of Escanaba and Gladstone, Michigan.

Unfortunately, their 2-2 record left them tied with three other teams for two wildcard spots. The tiebreaker rule of least runs allowed put Gladstone and Manitowoc,Wisconsin in to Sunday play.

Friday, the Black Sox lost two games, 15-5 to Napoleon,Ohio and 4-2 to the Gladstone Indians. D.J. Carter took the loss in the opener with the Napoleon River Rats. Jake Yukich had a double and a two run home run to pace the Black Sox. Gladstone defeated the Soo 4-2 in their second game of the day. Jake Yukich went the distance allowing two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking four.

The Soo scored twice in the top of the first inning when Nick Moon singled, Corey Jackson walked and Tyler Wilson singled loading the bases with none out. Jake Yukich singled home one run and Corey Jackson scored the second run when Jake Lake drew a bases loaded walk.

Gladstone scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game.The Black Sox loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with none out but failed to score as Corey Jackson struck out, Tyler Wilson popped out to the shortstop and Jake Yukich struck out to end the threat. The Black Sox stranded eleven runners over the course of the game. Gladstone then scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and held the Sox off the scoreboard in the seventh for the win.

Saturday was a complete turnaround.The Black Sox came out swinging, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning against Chief Pontiac. Nick Moon led off with a home run and the Sox scored three more times before the inning was over. Chief Pontiac scored four times in the second off of starter Chris Buonomo to tie the game.

The Soo scored five times in the fourth, highlighted by a three run home run by Jake Yukich. Yukich ended the game with a pair of singles to go along with the home run good for four RBI's.

Chief Pontiac mounted a come back in the bottom of the fourth scoring three runs before Tyler Wilson came on in relief of Buonomo to get the last two outs in the fourth. Wilson held Chief Pontiac in check the rest of the game. Wilson pitched 3 2/3 innings and not allowing a run on three hits,one strikeout and two walks. Ben Elliott chipped in with a pair of singles and thrw a runner out at the plate to end a Chief Pontiac threat.

The Black Sox followed that up by defeating the Negaunee Diamonds 16-4 in a game called after 5 innings due to the 10 run mercy rule. They scored six runs in the top of the first inning and crusied to the lopsided victory.

Kris Kerr picked up his first victory as a member of the Black Sox. Kerr scattered seven hits,striking out four, walking one and hitting one batter. Corey Jackson had a big game at the plate, with a double,two singles and four RBI's. Chris Buonomo had a double,single and two RBI's. Catcher Kory Lafreniere had a three hit game with a double and a pair of singles.

The Black Sox overall record now stands at 13-14. Next action for the team is Thursday when they travel to Alpena to take on the Summer Cats in a Great Lakes Baseball League doubleheader starting at 4 PM.
