Saturday afternoon in Menominee,Mi. the Cambrian Nissan Black Sox were defeated by the Escanaba Cubs 6-3 in the semi-finals of the Upper Peninsula American Legion Baseball Championships. The Black Sox came into the game as the number two seed with a record of 3-1 after pool play.

Jake Yukich was cruising along with a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning when the Cubs erupted for six runs. Yukich had struck out eight batters while allowing but one hit until the sixth.

The Black Sox jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third when Tyler Wilson singled with two out and Nick Moon followed with a line drive home run over the left field fence.They added another run in the sixth when Alex Morrison scored from third base on an errant throw from the pitcher on a pick off attempt.

In the sixth Yukich walked the lead off hitter, then two consecutive singles loaded the bases with none out. He got the next hitter on an infield pop out but Mark Bruce hit a two run single and Troy Rodman followed with a two run triple to give Escanaba it's first lead 4-3.

That was the end of the day for Yukich as Tyler Wilson came on in relief. Doug Beattie was given an intentional walk reloading the bases. With two out and the bases loaded Ryan Way hit a two run double to increase the lead to 6-3. Jordan Lemire then retired the Black Sox in order in the seventh to end the game.

The Escanaba Cubs went on to defeat the Gladstone Indians 6-2 in the Championship game. Gladstone advanced to the finals with a 7-3 victory over the EUP Travelers.

The Black Sox had defeated the Cubs in their first game of the tournament 6-1 with Chris Buonomo picking up the win. Jake Lake paced the Black Sox offence with three singles while Buonomo chipped in with a pair of singles and an RBI.

Game two saw the Black Sox defeat the Menominee Red Wave 2-1 in a thrilling contest. Red Wave lefty Aaron Woods struck out 17 in six innings of work,giving up but two hits, walked two and hit one batter. With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth Jake Lake drew a two out walk. Jake Yukich then jumped on Wood's first pitch, a high fastball, and drilled it into the alley in left centre scoring Lake with the go ahead run. Tyler Wilson picked up the victory going the distance scattering 5 hits,striking out two and walking three.

The Black Sox entered Friday as the only team, of the 10 teams entered, with a 2-0 record. They suffered their first setback when they were edged by the Negaunee Diamonds 5-4. D.J. Carter suffered the loss in relief of the starter Kris Kerr. The Black Sox scored their 4 runs on but three hits with the big blow being a bases loaded double by Corey Jackson that scored three runs. The Black Sox nursed a 4-3 lead until the bottom of the seventh.

Tyler Nault singled to start the bottom of the seventh inning. Corey Jackson was brought in to relieve Carter. Jackson got Cody Dagenais on a fielder's choice for the first out but Steve Ludlum doubled to score the tying run and Ludlum moved up to third on the throw home. Zak Uren then laid down a squeeze bunt that Jackson fielded but his throw home was high allowing Ludlum to score giving Negaunee the win.

In the most exciting contest of pool play the Black Sox rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Kingsford Blues 15-14. Trailing by 8 runs in their last at bat the Soo sent ten men to the plate highlighted by Jake Lake's two run walk off home run to centre field. D.J. Carter picked up the victory in relief of the starter Jake Lake. Lake had a double to go along with his home run and four RBI's. Corey Jackson had a pair of singles and two RBI's while Jake Yukich had a double,single and one RBI.

The Black Sox record now stands at 28-25.

CLOSE BUT NO CHAMPIONSHIP

Sunday afternoon at the James Field in Sault,Mi. the Cambrian Nissan Black Sox fell to Sanford,Mi. 7-5 in the championship game of the Paul C. Andary Memorial Tournament.

The game was tied 3-3 until the top of the fifth when Sanford scored twice and they added two more in the top of the seventh to carry a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

Jake Yukich started the game for the Black Sox on one day's rest having beaten Sanford 7-4 on Friday during round robin play. Sanford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second but the Black Sox scored twice in the bottom of the inning for a 2-1 lead.

Kory Lafreniere led off with a single, Jake Yukich singled and Scott Thornton laid down a sacrifice bunt putting runners at scond and third with one out. Corey Jackson then walked to load the bases. Nick Moon singled scoring Lafreniere and Yukich scored when D.J. Carter's grounball to short forced Moon out at second. tyler wilson the flew out to centre to end the inning.

Sanford scored twice in the top of the third to regain the lead but the Black Sox scored a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game 3-3. With one out Scott Thornton reached base when the second baseman bobbled Thornton's groundball. Jackson singled and Moon walked to load the bases. Carter struck out but Tyler Wilson had an infield single scoring Thornton. Jake Lake flew out to left field ending the inning.

In the top of the fifth Yukich walked the lead off man, the next hitter flew out to Moon in centre. Schmidt was safe on an infield error and Rytlewski walked to load the bases. Left-hander Kris Kerr entered the game in relief of Yukick. Kerr's first pitch was a wild pitch allowing the runner from third to score and the runner moved up to third. A balk was called, scoring another run, when Kerr attempted to pick the runner off at first. Kerr then retired the next two hitters to end the threat.

Sanford added two more in the top of the seventh to carry a 7-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Jake lake doubled to right centre with one out, Chris Buonomo followed with a single and Kory Lafreniere singled scoring Lake. Yukich struck out for the second out. Buonomo scored on a wild pitch making the score 7-5. Pinch hitter Dalton Thibodeau walked putting the tying run on base. Corey Jackson grounded out to the first baseman ending the threat and the ball game.

For the game Sanford had seven hits and left six men on base while the Black Sox had 11 hits while leaving 8 runners stranded.

Sanford,the number four seed,advanced to the championship game by defeating Alpena 14-3 while the Soo, seeded third knocked off the Mancelona Orange Crush 7-4.

The Black Sox (21-22 overall) have a busy weekend ahead. Friday they return Great Lakes Baseball League action when they host the Alpena Summer Cats in a doubleheader at Sinclair Yards starting at 4 PM. The Black Sox are 4-3 while Alpena comes in with a league record of 3-5.

Saturday The Black Sox will play the Escanaba Cubs in an exhibition doubleheader starting at 1 PM.

Sunday the Soo travels to Traverse City for a doubleheader of league action against the Rockets starting at 1 PM.
